The effect of parental management training on reducing of oppositional defiant disorder in mentally retarded students

Abstract Background & Purpose: Students with mental disability have more of oppositional defiant disorder than normal children. So, The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of parental management training on reducing the symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder in students with mental disability. Method: This research was a quasi-experimental method with pre-test and post-test with control and experimental groups. The statistical population of the present study included the parents of students with mental disabilities in exceptional schools in Salmas in 1397-1398. Thirty eligible individuals were selected by purposive sampling method and randomly assigned to the control group (n = 15) and the experimental group (n = 15). The Destructive Behavior Disorder Scale (1992) was used to collect data. In this study, the experimental group received 8 sessions of parental management training as a group and the control group did not receive any intervention. Results: Univariate analysis of covariance was used to analyze the research data. The results of research data showed that parental management training is effective in reducing the symptoms of disobediencestubbornness disorder (p <0.05). Conclusion: Based on the findings, it can be said that parental management education is an effective method in improving the symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder in students with mental disabilities.
